Liselle Van Zyl UKCP Registered

I offer long-term and brief individual psychotherapy and counselling, as well as relationship counselling. My practice takes a holistic view of the person and aims to enable self-awareness and insight, and bring about change in relation to a range of difficulties within the support of the therapeutic relationship.

My longstanding interest in psychology and psychotherapy led to training as a Gestalt Psychotherapist with the Metanoia Institute, London, which I completed in 2010. Gestalt Psychotherapy is a humanistic and experiential therapy which focuses on transformation and growth. It encourages self-understanding and awareness, and supports a lively exchange and engagement with life. As a holistic therapy, Gestalt Psychotherapy takes the view that people are linked to, and influenced by, their environment, and that people naturally strive towards growth and balance. From this perspectice, and emphasis on understanding bodily-felt experience in the present moment, people can discover more their full range of feelings, and come to accept and trust their emotions, leading to a greater sense of identity and personhood. While this is often a long-term psychotherapeutic process, brief counselling also engages in this way while focusing on solutions to life difficulties.

My work with couples and relationships also takes a Gestalt view, while drawing upon other therapeutic modalities, and facilitates impartial support for both persons in the therapy, and encourages deeper mutual understanding.

My practice is also informed by perspectives from transpersonal psychotherapy, mindfulness-based practices, and trauma therapies.
